16 May Mid-Morning Energy Booster
Nothing energizes you quite like a good night’s sleep.
But let’s be realistic…sometimes that just doesn’t happen, and you need a little extra shot of awesomeness to get through the mid-morning slump and power your way into the afternoon.
Generally speaking, something like a handful of almonds should be enough to keep you satisfied and keep your energy levels up. But when it’s not, try a shake like this one:
Combine 1/3 cup of frozen berries, one scoop of protein powder (vanilla), 1/2 tbsp. of ground flax seed, and 400 ml. of milk. I prefer almond milk for this just to keep the carbs down (there’s plenty of sugar in those berries after all), but tweak this to suit your taste. For an extra jolt, a teaspoon of instant coffee will kick it up, but don’t do this if you’re already three cups into your day!
Zap it all with a blender or hand mixer, and enjoy. I usually take this with my vitamins as well, since it’s a good combination of fats and proteins, which suits the fat-soluble vitamins nicely. The fat from the flax seeds and the protein from the powder will give you energy to last most of the mid-day, while the fruit sugars and caffeine will get you revved up right away (also making it a good pre-workout drink).
